K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 11.0.5

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Editor's Review

Get all the key codec players for audio and video records in one useful package.

This is an age of multiple distribution points for many different formats of music and video. We think that what most people want is the smooth functioning of all the necessary players. We all hate it if we download a track or a clip but can’t immediately watch it because we don’t have the necessary software in place. That is why K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is so useful. It is a collection of codecs and DirectShow filters and having it installed and ready on your machine is one of the steps that you can take to ensure continuous fun and no hiccups.

Mega is the most comprehensive of the K-Lite Codec group of products and it is true to say that we’ll probably never use half of its features. It allowed us to play our AVI’s, Flash, MP3s, MPEG-1,2 and 4, DVD videos and RealMedia tracks, without any difficulty, which means that we could play RealMedia files without having it installed.

Version 8.4.0 has just been released. We found installation unproblematic, though you might want to unclick a few things during the install, such as the toolbar. It allowed us to choose the components we wanted to install. The interface is easy, and windowsy.

Pro’s: It is free, easy to use and it works; regularly updated.

Con’s: Just Windows.

Conclusion: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a very popular set of tools. As a freebie with some visible effort from its developers I think we should give it a big round of applause and keep it in our list of favourites.
